19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

REFLECTION The Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes this year (22nd-29th July) appears to have been a huge success. Most of the pilgrims say they have benefited greatly from the time spent there; the liturgies and music, the spiritual and pastoral guidance given by the clergy, the prayer time shared with one another and the social activity enjoyed by all. The theme this year in Lourdes is the Lord’s invitation, "Come to me all you who suffer". Jesus says, "come to me" all who are troubled in any way –physically, mentally, psychologically, emotionally or spiritually. In other words, he is inviting us to have faith in him to save us. When so much in our lives threatens to overwhelm us, Jesus says "Courage, do not be afraid".

For the disciples, the experience of the storm on the lake becomes too much for them and Jesus is not with them. However, all of a sudden he appears on the raging sea and tries to calm them. Ready to demonstrate his faith in Jesus, Peter gets out of the boat to meet him. On the way, he panics at what is happening all around him and he goes down and, like a drowning man clutching at straw, he cries out for help. The Lord reaches out and pulls Peter out of the deluge. He asks only one question, "Why did you doubt?"

St Matthew’s account is like a parable, which represents the experience of life for all of us. God appears often to be far away, while we struggle with disasters, fears and afflictions. Sometimes we do make headway alone, but things get the better of us. While we cannot see God, we must have faith that he is aware of us and what is happening. We must have courage and he will appear at the most unexpected moment and give us the peace only he has the power to give. Father Andrew

ASSUMPTA EST MARIA IN CAELUM – LET US REJOICE

Next Sunday (14th Aug) is the Solemn Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady into heaven. (Transferred from 15th Aug.). There will be a service with Rosary, Litany of Our Lady, Vespers and Solemn Benediction at 3pm in St Joseph’s Church. Please make every effort to come and honour Mary on this wonderful feast.

COLOGNE 2005 Please pray for the young people of our Diocese who are going to Cologne for the World Youth Gathering with Pope Benedict XVI. They are in Germany between 11th-22nd August and are due to attend Mass with the Pope at the end of their visit. Pray also for our Seminarians who will meet the Holy Father personally, in a private audience with Seminarians from all over the world.

REST IN PEACE In recent weeks, a number of parishioners have asked if they could put their minds at rest by arranging their own funeral liturgy while they have the chance. At first glance, this might look a bit morbid, but in fact, it can be quite the opposite. Putting in order the type of service, readings, prayers, hymns, the place of committal, even choice of Funeral Directors, can leave people happy that all will be well for family and friends when the Lord calls them to their rest. I would be very happy to help in any way that I can. Father Andrew

FAMINE IN BURKINA FASO. As you have all heard on the news, drought conditions prevail, not only in Niger, but also in Burkina Faso its neighbour. Father Paul Nazotin has told us, in e-mails, that the country has some food, but because of its shortage, the prices asked for it are extremely high. Many poor people cannot afford it. We have told him to use some of his funds to help these people and we shall take up a collection at St Joseph’s & St Robert’s to help with these expenses. It is a collection, which literally will save lives, so we ask all to be generous. Money, either in cheques (made out to Marion Lawton) or cash, can be given to Fr. Andrew, Marion, or Joyce or Frank Malone, as soon as possible. Thank you. M L.
